Burdeos-Guéthary. Agosto 2013

During a week in august 2013, with an average of 60 kilometers a day, crossing the french departments of Gironde, Landes and Pyrénées Atlantiques. Landscape dominated by the Landes forest of Pinus pinaster and the sandy coast of Côte d’Argent, ranging from the Gironde estuary to the mouth of the Adour river in Anglet.

Day 1: Bordeaux-Biganos. The first day we cycled 41 km in total, almost the half by secondary roads and the other half by cyclable paths of Eurovelo 1 route. In the morning, we left the city of Bordeaux to the west, reaching our destination in Biganos three hours later. Meteorologically it was a heavy day, with clear sky and really high temperature in the area with a maximum of 37ºC, however we didn´t noticed it so much because we rested in a place with air conditioning till around five o’clock, and in a bicycle you don’t feel as hot as if you´re walking. After, we took again the bicycles and cycled some kilometres by the east part of the Arcachon’s bay, till a small village called Audenge.

Day 2: Biganos-Gujas Mestras. Second day. we cycled more than the day before, passing the hundred. The Dune of Pilat, is the tallest sand dune of Europe and it is located in La-Teste-de-Buch, has a volume of about 60,000,000 m³, measuring around 500 m wide from east to west and 2.7 km in length from north to south. Its height is currently 110 metres above sea level. The dune is a famous tourist destination with more than one million visitors per year. We left the bicycles in the parking and climbed walking. The view from the top of the Arcachon bay with a sunny day is beautiful.

Day 3: Gujan Mestras-Biscarrosse Plage. 56 km cycled in total. After one hour of cycling we stopped in a beach called “la Petit Nice”, where we took lunch. The day was a little bit cloudy. In one hour more of biking, at 14:15 h we reached Biscarrose and visited the beach Vivieres. In the evening, we had more time to see the town around. The coast of this part of France is sandy, beaten by brave Atlantic ocean waves, a nice place to surf and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Day 4: Biscarrosse Plage-Mimizan Plage. 59 km cycled. Entering the Landes department. We started cycling early in the morning. Passing Biscarrosse village we stopped in a supermarket to buy some food, though it was Sunday, were open. All the route by cyclabe path of Eurovelo 1, passing town of Parentis-en-Born and Gastes lake, where took some energy to continue the journey to Mimizan Plage, where arrived at four o’clock. The last part of this stage was a little bit hard, with an slope of a pair kilometres, very unusual in all the trip, before arriving Mimizan Plage.

Day 5: Mimizan Plage-Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains. 77 km cycled. The first idea was to reach Léon, but after two days sleeping outdoors wanted to sleep in a bed and in Léon everything was booked. So we continued cycling to Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains, where we found a room in a camping. In the afternoon we where around Soustons lake and playing tennis on the beach.

Day 6: Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains-Anglet. 64 km cycled. Entering the Basque Country.
